Pastor’s Update, October 5, 2018

IN THIS UPDATE:

THE YOUTH RESCUE MISSION OUTREACH IS TOMORROW, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6: Meet at the church at 3:45 pm, then drive over to the Rescue Mission to serve. Return to Gold Coast Church by 6:30 pm. Call Stuart Baker at 805.427.5528 for more information.

THANKS TO ALL WHO TOOK PART IN MAKING THIS PAST SUNDAY’S PICNIC a fun and special time for the Gold Coast family! Special thanks to Jon and Kristy Bias and Darrell Foote for heading up the effort. It was a wonderful afternoon of connecting with the church family and making new friends in a beautiful and relaxing setting.

THIS SUNDAYwe continue our series of messages on shocking statements made of Jesus by looking at Matthew 19:3–9. In talking about marriage with the Pharisees, Jesus says, “Whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.” What does Jesus teach about marriage, divorce and re-marriage? I encourage you to read the passage and come prepared to dig in as we tackle this teaching together.  This would be a good Sunday to invite a friend to join you!

ANNUAL OXNARD CHURCHES SERVE DAY, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13: The annual“ONE CITY- ONE CHURCH” Serve Day will take place from about 9 AM to noon that day. Gold Coast is joining other churches in our area to serve the people of Oxnard through the love of Jesus.

The following are areas you can serve in during that 3-hour time period: Neighborhood/Alley Cleanup, Beach Cleanup, Sack lunch distribution, Homeless Care Kit Distribution, Shelter Care Resources (Foster Kids Fest), Prayer Team (Levite Ministry), Structure Painting, Flower Distribution, Water Distribution, Beach Cleanup, Gabriel House Cleanup, Convalescent Home Visit, Coffee Outreach and Laundry Love. (If you usually serve at Buddy Break, please continue to serve as a Buddy or for setting up or resetting rooms.) As you can see, there’s a place for every Christ-follower to serve that day so please put it on your calendar and plan to take part in this important experience.

Last year’s first event of its kind proved to be a powerful experience and display of unity in the name of Jesus and this year’s event promises to be even greater!

I’d love to see 100% of our Gold Coast family to participate that day and here’s why. This is the best opportunity we have all year to participate in something that helps fulfill Jesus’ prayer for unity among his people:“I pray for these followers, but I am also praying for all those who will believe in me because of their teaching. Father, I pray that they can be one. As you are in me and I am in you, I pray that they can also be one in us. Then the world will believe that you sent me” (John 17:20–21).

STEPHEN MINISTRY: In difficult times, God’s love is especially precious to us, and it is very important to know someone who cares. Our congregation has trained Stephen Ministers who offer a ministry of Christian caring. To find out more about being trained as a Stephen Minister or to receive a Stephen Minister’s care, write “Stephen Ministry” on your Connection Card and place it in the offering basket this Sunday or call Art or Rose Flatray at 805.987.1428 for more information.

IN THIS UPDATE:

WE’LL HAVE ONE WORSHIP SERVICE THIS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, AT 10:00 AM. (Please make note that our regular Sunday morning service schedule will be suspended that day.)We’ll worship together at the church at 10:00 am and then go to the church picnic at 12:30-4:30 pm.

THIS SUNDAY we continue our series of messages on shocking statements made by Jesus as we look at one of his best-known and yet often misunderstood statements (by both Christians and Non-Christians alike).  It’s recorded in a couple places in the gospels (Matthew 7 and Luke 6): “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”  What does he mean by that? Is no one ever to judge anyone or anything?  Bring your questions with you as we tackle this teaching together. I think we’re going to be both challenged and encouraged!  Bring a friend along!

OUR ALL-CHURCH PICNIC IS THIS SUNDAY! After the worship service today, we’re meeting at Camarillo Grove Park (6968 E. Camarillo Springs Road). The picnic starts at12:30 PM.  They’ll be food, fellowship, games, and FUN! (I understand there might even be some jamming going on.)

If you haven’t signed up yet, stop by the Welcome Desk in the lobby on Sunday.

Last year’s first event of its kind proved to be a powerful experience and display of unity in the name of Jesus and this year’s event promises to be even greater!

I’m praying for 100% of our Gold Coast family to participate that day and here’s why. This is the best opportunity we have all year long to participate in seeing Jesus’ prayer for unity fulfilled among his people:“I pray for these followers, but I am also praying for all those who will believe in me because of their teaching. Father, I pray that they can be one. As you are in me and I am in you, I pray that they can also be one in us. Then the world will believe that you sent me” (John 17:20–21 NCV).

Max Lucado writes: How precious are these words. Jesus, knowing the end is near, prays one final time for his followers. Striking, isn’t it, that he prayed not for their success, their safety, or their happiness.

He prayed for their unity. He prayed that they would love each other. As he prayed for them, he also prayed for “those who will believe because of their teaching.” That means us! In his last prayer Jesus prayed that you and I be one.

Of all the lessons we can draw from this verse, don’t miss the most important: unity matters to God. Why? Because “all people will know that you are my followers if you love each other” (John 13:35 NCV). Unity creates belief. How will the world believe that Jesus was sent by God? Not if we agree with each other. Not if we solve every controversy. Not if we are unanimous on each vote. Not if we never make a doctrinal error. But if we love one another.

Unity creates belief. Disunity fosters disbelief. Who wants to board a ship of bickering sailors? Paul Billheimer may very well be right when he says: “The continuous and widespread fragmentation of the Church has been the scandal of the ages. It has been Satan’s master strategy. The sin of disunity probably has caused more souls to be lost than all other sins combined.”

Could it be that unity is the key to reaching the world for Christ? The world will be won for Christ when the church is one in Christ. If unity is the key to evangelism, shouldn’t it have precedence in our prayers? Shouldn’t we, as Paul said, “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3 NIV)?

Nowhere, by the way, are we told to build unity. We are told simply to keep unity. From God’s perspective there is but “one flock and one shepherd” (John 10:16). Unity does not need to be created; it simply needs to be protected.

Where there is faith, repentance, and a new birth, there is a Christian. When I meet a person whose faith is in the cross and whose eyes are on the Savior, I meet a brother or a sister. Wasn’t that Paul’s approach? When he wrote the church in Corinth, he addressed a body of Christians guilty of every sin from abusing the Lord’s Supper to arguing over the Holy Spirit. But how does he address them? “I beg you, brothers and sisters” (1 Corinthians 1:10 NCV).

When the church in Rome was debating whether to eat meat offered to idols, did Paul tell them to start two churches? One for the meat-eaters and one for the non-meat-eaters? No, on the contrary, he urged, “Christ accepted you, so you should accept each other, which will bring glory to God” (Romans 15:7 NCV).

Is God asking us to do anything more than what he has already done? Hasn’t he gone a long way in accepting us? If God can tolerate my mistakes, can’t I tolerate the mistakes of others? If God allows me, with my foibles and failures, to call him Father, shouldn’t I extend the same grace to others? If God doesn’t demand perfection, should I? “They are God’s servants,” Paul reminds us, “not yours. They are responsible to him, not to you. Let him tell them whether they are right or wrong. And God is able to make them do as they should” (Romans 14:4 TLB).

Pastor’s Update, September 7, 2018

IN THIS UPDATE:

THIS SUNDAY we conclude our Relational Wisdom sermon series from the book of Proverbs by looking at being, knowing, and doing.

John Piper says, “When the Bible says in Proverbs 4:5, “Get wisdom, get insight,” it does not mean, “Go to school, take more courses.” Moses taught that wisdom consists in knowing and doing the commandments of God. Deuteronomy 4:5–6 says, “Behold I have taught you statutes and ordinances, as the Lord my God commanded me that you should do them . . . Keep them and do them; for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples.”

Jesus said the same thing about his own words, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon a rock” (Matthew 7:24).

This is what we’ve been seeing through this series: godly wisdom is knowing and doing God’s Word. As we know and do God’s Word, we become truly wise.

This Sunday we’re going to see how knowing, doing and being/becoming are each a part of how we grow as disciples of Jesus.

SUNDAYS IN DISCOVERY COVE (Gold Coast’s Children Ministry): 9:15 AM Service: birth to 5 years old are in the preschool room; 10:45 AMService: birth to 5 years old are in the preschool room and kindergarten to 5th grade in the elementary room.

This second to last message in this series has the potential to tune-up and even do a major overhaul on our relationships as we look closely at the insight and instructions God gives us in Proverbs.

Pastor’s Update, August 24, 2018

IN THIS UPDATE:

THIS SUNDAY: As was shared a couple of weeks ago, this Sunday is DeeDee’s last Sunday on staff here at Gold Coast. She has served a vital role the last five years as our Children’s Ministry Director. God has touched many lives through her and we’re thankful for her ministry!

We will have a cake in her honor between the 2 morning services on the patio. If you attend the 10:45 AM service, make sure to arrive a little early so you can participate. Feel free to bring cards of love and appreciation!

We continue our sermon series, Relational Wisdom, from the book of Proverbs on Sunday. We’re going to look at the problem of pride and its effects on our relationships, with God and others.

Matt Woodley writes the following: Here’s some good news: if you’re like most people, you’re way above average—at almost everything. Psychologists call this the state of “illusory superiority.” (It’s also called “The Lake Wobegone Effect,” from Garrison Keillor’s fictional Minnesota town where “all the children are above average.”) It simply means that we tend to inflate our positive qualities and abilities, especially in comparison to other people.

Numerous research studies have revealed this tendency to overestimate ourselves. For instance, when researches asked a million high school students how well they got along with their peers, none of the students rated themselves below average. As a matter of fact, 60 percent of students believed they were in the top 10 percent; 25 percent rated themselves in the top one percent. You’d think college professors might have more self-insight, but they were just as biased about their abilities. Two percent rated themselves below average; 10 percent were average and 63 were above average; while 25 percent rated themselves as truly exceptional.

Of course, this is statistically impossible. One researcher summarized the data this way: “It’s the great contradiction: the average person believes he is a better person than the average person.” Christian psychologist Mark McMinn contends that the “Lake Wobegone Effect” reveals our pride. He writes, “One of the clearest conclusions of social science research is that we are proud. We think better of ourselves than we really are, we see our faults in faint black and white rather than in vivid color, and we assume the worst in others while assuming the best in ourselves.”

TOMORROW IS HIGHER GROUND’S ESCONDIDO FALLS HIKE- SATURDAY, AUGUST 25: Join others for a beautiful hike in Malibu at Escondido Falls off Pacific Coast Highway. This hike will start off in a beautiful Malibu neighborhood overlooking the ocean with gorgeous views. We venture to a trail that takes us through a creek surrounded by herbs, flowers and wildlife. There will be fun rock-hopping until we reach the Lower Escondido Falls where water pours over a wall of lush green moss landing in a calm pool. Dogs are allowed on the trail. No bathrooms. (Use Starbucks in Malibu.) Invite a friend!

Pastor’s Update, August 16, 2018

IN THIS UPDATE:

THIS SUNDAY we continue our sermon series, Relational Wisdom, from the book of Proverbs. We will look specifically at God says about how to speak to others. We’re going to see our words are powerful.

Craig Groeschel writes, “Perhaps the adult translation of the age-old children adage, ‘sticks and stones my break my bones, but words can never hurt me’ is more like ‘stick and stones can bruise your body for a few days, but words can scar your soul for life’… Whether you’re eighteen or eighty, you can probably recall the pain of someone’s harsh words scalding your soul.”

Rubel Shelly states, “Like starting a forest fire, it requires little effort to produce a “wildfire” with our tongues. Rumors, half-truths, grumblings, sarcastic remarks, hurtful things said in the heat of anger—all of these smoldering matches have the potential for burning down acres of office morale, family peace, and personal relationships.”

As we’ll see, Proverbs has much to say to those who desire to honor God with their tongues. It’s going to be good day to come together.  I look forward to seeing you!

HIGHER GROUND ESCONDIDO FALLS HIKE — SATURDAY, AUGUST 25: Join others for a beautiful hike in Malibu at Escondido Falls off Pacific Coast Highway. This hike will start off in a beautiful Malibu neighborhood overlooking the ocean with gorgeous views. We venture to a trail that takes us through a creek surrounded by herbs, flowers and wildlife. Pastor’s Update, August 10, 2018

IN THIS UPDATE:

NINOS DE BAJA SUMMER TRIP: Please be praying for the following folks (as well as the staff, tias and parents) who are on this trip today through Sunday: Mike and Lynne Yeaman, Jill Dwyer, Sharon and Blake Wilson, Rachel, Kai and Laini Sutherland, Gary and Cruz Hanson. They are delivering the school supplies Gold Coast provided for the kids of Ninos de Baja, our orphanage in Mexico. Pray for travel safety and that they are a blessing to the kids of Ninos.

THIS SUNDAY we start a new sermon series. We’ll invest the next few weeks in Proverbs, the Bible’s wisdom book. We’re going to look at what God wants for us in all of our relationships with others. This Sunday we look at the relationship called friendship.

Vivek Murthy served as the 19th Surgeon General of the United States From 2014 to 2017.  He says one of the most dangerous health crises in America today is the epidemic of loneliness. In an article he wrote for the August 2017 edition of the Harvard Business Review, entitled, “Work and the Loneliness Epidemic”, Murthy shares the following:

“We live in the most technologically connected age in the history of civilization, yet rates of loneliness have doubled since the 1980s. Today, over 40% of adults in America report feeling lonely, and research suggests that the real number may well be higher.

Additionally, the number of people who report having a close confidante in their lives has been declining over the past few decades.

During my tenure as US surgeon general … [and] my years caring for patients, the most common pathology I saw was not heart disease or diabetes; it was loneliness. The elderly man who came to our hospital every few weeks seeking relief from chronic pain was also looking for human connection: He was lonely. The middle-aged woman battling advanced HIV who had no one to call to inform that she was sick: She was lonely too. I found that loneliness was often in the background of clinical illness, contributing to disease and making it harder for patients to cope and heal.

Loneliness and weak social connections are associated with a reduction in lifespan similar to that caused by smoking 15 cigarettes a day and even greater than that associated with obesity. But we haven’t focused nearly as much effort on strengthening connections between people as we have on curbing tobacco use or obesity. Loneliness is also associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, depression, and anxiety. At work, loneliness reduces task performance, limits creativity, and impairs other aspects of executive function such as reasoning and decision making. For our health and our work, it is imperative that we address the loneliness epidemic quickly.”

It’s crystal-clear that relationships are the most important things in all of life. Jesus said the second greatest command God has for us is love others. He longs for us to experience and develop healthy relationships with others, to do relationships right. That’s what we’re going to begin tackling together in God’s word this Sunday. I look forward being with you. Invite a friend to attend with you. This will be a good day to have others join you at Gold Coast!
